The first time I heard the word waifu I thought it was a new haircut. 

I was hanging out with some friends, chatting about anime, when someone mentioned their favorite waifu. 

I jumped in, excitedly talking about how I liked Izumi Miyamura’s haircut from Horimiya.

The room went quiet, and then everyone burst out laughing.

Turns out, the ‘waifu meaning’ has nothing to do with haircuts. 😂

Anime Waifu 101: The Basics

So what is a waifu? A waifu is what otaku’s (anime fans) call a female character who would be the ideal girlfriend.

Are all attributes anime fans name when they are describing the meaning of waifu.

So now that you know what the exact waifu definition is, it’s time to dig a little bit deeper into this. You see, the term ‘waifu’ isn’t something that’s been around for centuries – it’s brand new.

The story of waifus began in a pretty funny way. 

It all started with an anime called “Azumanga Daioh!” where a character, Mr. Kimura, showed a photo of his wife and called her “mai waifu.” ¹

This was meant to be a quick laugh, but anime fans took it and ran with it. They started calling their favorite female characters their “waifus,” and just like that, BOOM! – a new trend was born. 

It’s a quirky mix of Japanese and English, and even though it started as a joke, it quickly became a fun way for anime fans to talk about their favorite fictional characters.

Waifus and Anime Culture: Why They Matter

So, why do waifus matter so much in anime culture? 

Good question.

My answer?

A waifu represents the IDEAL partner for many fans, combining all the traits they admire. It’s a way for fans to express themselves and share what they value in a character. 

Whether it’s their personality, their strength, or just the way they make fans feel, waifus have become a key part of what makes anime fandom so unique and vibrant.

So How Popular are Waifus Right Now?

That was the first question I had when I discovered about how this all started.

If we take a look at Google Trends, we can see that the search volume has been exploding in recent years.

From 2020 till 2021, the keyword “waifu” went from 15k to 60k monthly searches. Afterwards, it slowly decreased in popularity. ²

In 2023, the estimated search volume is around 30k/month.

Although waifus are not as popular as a few years back, they are still a force to be reckoned with.

Waifus vs. Best Girls: Spot the Difference

In the world of anime, you’ll often hear about “waifus” and “Best Girls,” but they’re not quite the same thing. 

Both are terms of affection for female characters, but they have their own unique flavors. 

What Makes a Waifu, What Makes a Best Girl

Waifus are the ultimate anime characters for most fans. Think of them as more than just a favorite; they are the ideal, almost like a dream partner. 

An anime fan sees a waifu as the complete girlfriend package – they’re characters who have everything a fan could wish for in a partner. 

This includes traits like kindness, bravery, or a great sense of humor. 

On the other hand, the Best Girl is a bit different. She’s like the MVP of an anime series – the most awesome, interesting, or relatable female character. 

While a waifu is about personal, idealized connection, the Best Girl is more about being a standout fictional character in the show, regardless of whether she’d be a great partner in real life.

To give you an example, take the mega-popular series Demon Slayer.

Nezuko is without a doubt the best girl in the series.

She’s tough, cute, and super caring. But she doesn’t speak much.

In fact, she only spoke 5 sentences or so in 3 entire seasons – so not really waifu material if you ask me.

Then you have Miss Mitsuri Kanroji who’s super feminine, cute, strong, caring, and just 100% awesomeness. 

Although I like Nezuko I would say Mitsuri Kanroji is definitely more waifu material.

So, why does the anime fandom get into heated debates about waifus and Best Girls? 

It’s all about personal preference and what each fan value the female anime characters. 

It’s a way for them to share their views and connect with others who have similar (or sometimes totally different) tastes.

‘Who’s the top waifu‘ is a more dangerous question than ‘Are you a Democrat or Republican’ when it’s election time.

For example, Mikasa Ackerman in Attack on Titan is tough and loyal – qualities many anime fans look up to.

When you watch an anime series, you go through all the ups and downs with the characters. 

This makes waifu’s like Nezuko from Demon Slayer feel like old friends because we’ve been through a lot together in their stories.

#4 They Look Awesome

Anime art is cool, and waifus are no exception. 

Their unique styles, from the clothes they wear to their hair, make them stand out.

Think of Zero Two from Darling in the Franxx – her look is as memorable as her personality.
