Waifu Meaning

The Quick Answer:

Waifus are favorite characters from anime and manga that fans fall in love with, often seeing them as the perfect partner. These characters stand out for their unique personalities, looks, and important roles in their stories. Fans deeply connect with them because of their admirable qualities like bravery and kindness. For example, characters like Rem from “Re: Zero” and Asuna Yuuki from “Sword Art Online” are considered top waifus by many fans.

Good question.

The first time I heard the word waifu I thought it was a new haircut.

I was hanging out with some friends, chatting about anime, when someone mentioned their favorite waifu

I jumped in, excitedly talking about how I liked Izumi Miyamura’s haircut from Horimiya.

The room went quiet, and then everyone burst out laughing.

Turns out, the ‘waifu meaning’ has nothing to do with haircuts. ????

Anime Waifu 101: The Basics

So what is a waifu? A waifu is what otaku’s (anime fans) call a female character who would be the ideal girlfriend.

  • Sweet
  • Nurturing
  • Courageous
  • Feminine

Are all attributes anime fans name when they are describing the meaning of waifu.

So now that you know what the exact waifu definition is, it’s time to dig a little bit deeper into this. You see, the term ‘waifu’ isn’t something that’s been around for centuries – it’s brand new.

How It All Started: The Birth of Waifus

The story of waifus began in a pretty funny way.

It all started with an anime called “Azumanga Daioh!” where a character, Mr. Kimura, showed a photo of his wife and called her “mai waifu.” 1

Azumanga Daioh! manga cover

This was meant to be a quick laugh, but anime fans took it and ran with it. They started calling their favorite female characters their “waifus,” and just like that, BOOM! – a new trend was born.

It’s a quirky mix of Japanese and English, and even though it started as a joke, it quickly became a fun way for anime fans to talk about their favorite fictional characters.

Waifus and Anime Culture: Why They Matter

So, why do waifus matter so much in anime culture?

Good question.

My answer?

It’s not just about picking a favorite anime girl; it’s about finding a fictional; character that fans connect with on a deeper level.

A waifu represents the IDEAL partner for many fans, combining all the traits they admire. It’s a way for fans to express themselves and share what they value in a character.

Whether it’s their personality, their strength, or just the way they make fans feel, waifus have become a key part of what makes anime fandom so unique and vibrant.

So How Popular are Waifus Right Now?

That was the first question I had when I discovered about how this all started.

If we take a look at Google Trends, we can see that the search volume has been exploding in recent years.

Popularity of waifu on google trends

From 2020 till 2021, the keyword “waifu” went from 15k to 60k monthly searches. Afterwards, it slowly decreased in popularity. 2

In 2023, the estimated search volume is around 30k/month.

Although waifus are not as popular as a few years back, they are still a force to be reckoned with.

Waifus vs. Best Girls: Spot the Difference

In the world of anime, you’ll often hear about “waifus” and “Best Girls,” but they’re not quite the same thing.

Both are terms of affection for female characters, but they have their own unique flavors.

What Makes a Waifu, What Makes a Best Girl

Waifus are the ultimate anime characters for most fans. Think of them as more than just a favorite; they are the ideal, almost like a dream partner.

An anime fan sees a waifu as the complete girlfriend package – they’re characters who have everything a fan could wish for in a partner.

This includes traits like kindness, bravery, or a great sense of humor.

On the other hand, the Best Girl is a bit different. She’s like the MVP of an anime series – the most awesome, interesting, or relatable female character.

While a waifu is about personal, idealized connection, the Best Girl is more about being a standout fictional character in the show, regardless of whether she’d be a great partner in real life.

To give you an example, take the mega-popular series Demon Slayer.

Nezuko is without a doubt the best girl in the series.

She’s tough, cute, and super caring. But she doesn’t speak much.

In fact, she only spoke 5 sentences or so in 3 entire seasons – so not really waifu material if you ask me.

Then you have Miss Mitsuri Kanroji who’s super feminine, cute, strong, caring, and just 100% awesomeness.

Although I like Nezuko I would say Mitsuri Kanroji is definitely more waifu material.

Mitsuri Kanroji
  Waifus Best Girls
Definition Ideal romantic partner Favorite female character
Connection Deep, personal Admiration for traits/role
Traits  Partner-like qualities (kind, loyal) Standout features (strong, funny)
Emotion Strong, often romantic More about fandom, less personal
Role in Anime Personal compatibility Key/memorable character
Fan Debate  Suitability as a partner Character’s impact in the show
Subjectivity  Reflects personal ideals Broader audience appeal
Examples  Hinata (Naruto) Mikasa (Attack on Titan)

Fans’ Take: Why We Argue About Them

So, why does the anime fandom get into heated debates about waifus and Best Girls?

It’s all about personal preference and what each fan value the female anime characters.

For some, their waifu is a reflection of their ideal romantic relationship, while their favorite Best Girl might just be the coolest or most fun type of character in the show.

These discussions can get pretty intense because fans are passionate about why they love a certain fictional character.

It’s a way for them to share their views and connect with others who have similar (or sometimes totally different) tastes.

Meet the Stars: Famous Waifus and Their Charm

Who’s the top waifuis a more dangerous question than ‘Are you a Democrat or Republican’ when it’s election time.

There are tons of anime series being released so it’s changing every year month. However, some of the best waifus that are highly rated among anime fans are:

  • Hinata Hyuga (Naruto)
  • Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
  • Rem (Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World)
  • Zero Two (Darling in the Franxx)
  • Asuna Yuuki (Sword Art Online)
  • Nami (One Piece)
  • Saber (Fate/stay night)
  • Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket)
  • Rukia Kuchiki (Bleach)
  • Miku Nakano (The Quintessential Quintuplets)
  • Marin Kitagawa (My Dress-Up Darling)
  • Chizuru Mizuhara (Rent-A-Girlfriend)
  • Raphtalia (The Rising of the Shield Hero)
  • Nezuko Kamado (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba)

Why We Can’t Get Enough of Them

Pfff… I could probably name 4 quintillion reasons why we anime fans can’t get enough of anime waifus.

For the sake of this article (and me boring you to death), it boils down to these key points.

#1 They’re Super Relatable

Waifus often have personalities that feel real.

Take Hinata Hyuuga from Naruto – she’s shy but super brave when it counts, just like many of us wish to be.

Anime fans see a bit of themselves in these characters, or they see qualities they really admire.

#2 They’re Our Dream Team

Waifus are like the best version of a partner you could think of.

They’re kind, strong, or super smart.

For example, Mikasa Ackerman in Attack on Titan is tough and loyal – qualities many anime fans look up to.

#3 We Feel Like We Know Them

When you watch an anime series, you go through all the ups and downs with the characters.

This makes waifu’s like Nezuko from Demon Slayer feel like old friends because we’ve been through a lot together in their stories.

#4 They Look Awesome

Anime art is cool, and waifus are no exception.

Their unique styles, from the clothes they wear to their hair, make them stand out.

Think of Zero Two from Darling in the Franxx – her look is as memorable as her personality.

#5 They’re Our Escape

Sometimes, life gets tough, and diving into an anime world helps.

Waifus are part of that escape, giving us a glimpse into a world where anything’s possible.

#6 They Bring Fans Together

Anime fans love talking about their favorite female anime characters.

It’s fun to share why you like a character, like Chizuru Mizuhara from Rent-A-Girlfriend, and hear what others think too.

It’s a big part of being in the anime community.

What’s Next for Waifus? Peeking into the Future

Anime waifus aren’t just staying in the shows anymore. They’re stepping into the future with some really cool stuff that’s got fans super excited.

Let’s take a sneak peek at what’s coming up. ????

The AI Waifu Revolution

Now, with apps like Candy.ai and eHentai.ai, fans can create their own perfect waifu and ACTUALLY talk with her.

These ‘AI waifus’ are virtual anime partners. You can choose how they look, and what personality they have, how they behave and then chat with them using AI technology.

It’s like you jump in the shoes of your favorite protagonist and role play into adventures that will knock your socks off.

AI-Powered Anime Art Magic

And if you think AI waifu isn’t enough, then this is going to blow your mind.

Some apps allow you to create stunning anime art using AI. In fact, some even allow you to create ENTIRE mangas just by hitting a few buttons.

From my experience, the best one is Yodayo AI. It’s kind of a hassle because you need to use prompts to create images but once you know how to rock it – you will be addicted.

The best thing about Yodayo AI is that you can recreate images from your favorite mangas and give your own spin to them.

For example, if you really like Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan – you can create beautiful images of her in different styles.

Let’s say you want to give her a more modern 3D-stylish look:
