l-theanine

What is L-Theanine?

L-Theanine is an amino acid that promotes well-being and helps deal with anxiety and the stresses of everyday life. You can use L-Theanine for anxiety, keeping you safe from dangerous pharmaceutical drugs that in my opinion only do more harm than good.

How does it work?

Essentially, L-Theanine works so well because of its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. It is this ability to reach the brain the allows it to have such a profound effect on our lives.

1) It promotes the production of Dopamine and Serotonin

These are two of the main neurotransmitters involved in happiness and relaxation.

2) It promotes the production of GABA

GABA is used by your brain to prevent neurons from firing too much, resulting in a calmer brain. Xanax and similar drugs aid in the production of GABA.

3) It increases Alpha Brain Waves

Alpha Brain Waves are associated with meditation and relaxation. A rise in alpha brain waves allows you to relax and focus.

4) Best of all, it’s non-addictive

Benzodiazepines like Xanax and Klonopin are like pharmaceutical versions of L-Theanine. Except for the fact that they are extremely addictive and habit-forming. Unlike these dangerous drugs, L-Theanine is non-habit forming and leaves no withdrawals upon stopping.

My experiences with L-Theanine

L-Theanine has been a wonder drug for me. I had a rough stint in my life after a bad drug reaction where I was getting panic attacks and anxiety, daily. For this, I used to take Xanax. Long story short I had bad withdrawals after using Xanax for just a month.

After this, I stumbled upon L-Theanine. L-Theanine was just as effective in warding off a panic attack as the Xanax was, but with no withdrawals. I now have no problems with anxiety attacks (thank god), but when I am stressed 200 mg of L-Theanine clears my head and allows me to focus and calm down.

It works every time!

I also take it when I am hungover, and it works like a charm. It acts on the same neurotransmitters that alcohol and benzos like Xanax do, and is proven to cross the blood-brain barrier.

This is a supplement that pharmaceutical companies don’t want you to know about so you can keep spending hundreds of dollars a year on anti-anxiety med’s that only put you in a work position in the long run.

What else can L-Theanine be used for?

The benefits of L-Theanine do not stop at just an anti-panic attack med. Many people use it with success for many other reasons.

1) L-Theanine is known to work so well that many people take it for social and approach anxiety.

Check out this article on how some guy uses L-Theanine to overcome his approach anxiety and talk to women. I never did this because I wanted to overcome my approach anxiety and not have to rely on a drug. But that’s how good it works.

2) Combining L-Theanine and Caffeine.

L-Theanine is notoriously known to be taken with caffeine to greatly improve mental clarity. When taken with caffeine it boosts the focus factor of the caffeine and takes away the jitters and anxiety that comes with it. But be careful. If you are already prone to anxiety caffeine may strongly exacerbate your symptoms.

3) Curing insomnia

L-Theanine can be a Godsend to sufferers of insomnia due to its ability to promote Alpha Brain Waves and relaxation.

Where to buy L-Theanine

L-Theanine is sold everywhere so I can only comment on what I use. I love this pure pharmaceutical grade L-Theanine from 88Herbs. It’s incredibly pure, it works quickly, and there are zero fillers in the caps. It’s also in a full 250 mg dose, which I find to be the best.

For more options when buying L Theanine, it’s a pretty safe bet to use Suntheanine. It’s another patented and very absorbable form. Just make sure the brands use no fillers at all.

In Conclusion

If you are suffering from anxiety or panic attacks I highly recommend you try to get a hold of it with L-Theanine before resorting to benzodiazepines and anti-depressants.

I am clearly not a doctor and consult with your doctor first, but think about giving it a shot. In my opinion, those psychoactive drugs, unless absolutely necessary are very dangerous and overprescribed. Some other things you can try are meditation and exercise.

These can go a long way in your recovery. They definitely did with mine.

  1. L-Theanine… Something I discovered thanks to blue AMP a few years ago. While sadly it didn’t remove my anxiety, it did reduce the side-effects of being sleep deprived far more than just caffeine. When I took it alone, it… Didn’t do anything noticeable for me.
So yes, it synergizes with caffeine.
I did give up some L-Theanine pills to a friend who was having some anxiety at the time, and it definitely did help him for that.
So they don’t help everyone for anxiety, but they’re worth trying. A hell of a lot safer than any of the prescription meds (and many people don’t get any benefit from those either.) If it works for you great. If not, maybe you’ll find yourself a bit sharper.
It’s an amino-acid by the way, not a herb. It comes from the herb green tea though.
I’d like to see an experiment where someone who has social / approach anxiety uses l-thanine for a while (we’ll say 30 days), actively going into situations that would have made them anxious without the drug- Then see how they perform after a long enough period for the drug to be completely out of their system.
I’m willing to bet it would still train them to be far more comfortable than when they started. It’s not like you don’t have an experience just because you’re in a calmer state of mind.

    • Hey man,
Good catch on the amino acid thing. This was one of my first articles, I have been meaning to go back a spruce it up, when I do I’ll change that up.
Yeah that would a cool experiment.
Sound similar to this article here: http://www.returnofkings.com/9281/the-pill-that-cures-approach-anxiety
The guy uses L-Theanine to ease his approach anxiety. It can really work wonders for some people.
Maybe in the future I’ll try to get something like that going if I can find someone willing to be a test subject haha
Thanks for the comment tho, keep in touch.

      • Question please
Is it ok to take theanine in the morning? I was hoping by taking it in the morning it would make me feel more relaxed and less anxious during the day.
I’ve also been having episodes where my arms and sometimes my legs feel achy and week.
        I do have actual strength
In my arms and legs but it’s just a nagging terrible heavy achy feeling.
Do you think this could be a symptom of anxiety?? and if so would you agree that theanine might help me ?

  3. Hi Sean. I was wondering just exactly how much l theanine you used to eliminate your anxiety? I had an experience similar to yours in which i had a several devastating panic attacks from cocaine in one night and ever since then have been suffering with daily anxiety and panic attacks to a much lesser extent but still very hard to cope with. I started on 200 mg a day of l theanine last week and i have to say there is a good 30 to 40% reduction in my anxiety. How long did you treat your self with L theanine and What dosage? Thank you.

    • Hey Eric,
I am sorry to hear about your story. I wouldn’t wish anxiety, especially drug induced, on anyone. I was taking 100 mg 3 times a day for a few weeks when it was bad. Even though it helps I try not to take anything now and try to calm my anxiety naturally.
How long has it been since the cocaine incident?

  4. I enjoy L-Theanine’s many benefits. Great supplement. For those with social anxiety/stress, I would recommend this with 500 mgs or so of L-Tyrosine on an empty stomach. I think it’s a better energy booster and stress reliever than taking caffeine, which could actually promote anxiety depending on the dosage. I use L-Tyrosine/L-Theanine together as a great anxiolytic stack. Only drawback to Tyrosine is your body’s tolerance to it, so use it every other day or so, or when u absolutely need it, switch it up. Don’t worry though, even if you build a bit of tolerance to it, just wait a day or so. That’s usually the turnaround rate.
Great supplements both. I can’t recommend em enough.

  5. Any idea on how long L-Theanine takes to get into our system? I.E. Should I be taking it with my caffeine directly or wait 20 minutes? Would love to understand the optimal time to take it

    Reply
    • Not sure Scott,
But I would think that the same time would be a good idea. The caffeine takes about 20 minutes and I would guess L-Theanine to be close to the same.

  6. Can you take Theanine while on Zoloft @ 25mg at night an 25mg n morn of Zoloft. Total of 50mg. Im currently on Clonapine but only take either .5mg or 1mg when needed. I want off thr Clonapine. Im 2mnths into post Tramadol withdrawl so I guess thats why dr started me on Zoloft since Tramadol messes with Serotonin. Just dont want any interactions with Zoloft. Im getting off it to but slowly. Only been on it since May 29th. Just wondering.
    Thanks , Lynn

    • Hey Lynn,
I am not a doctor so I don’t want to be throwing out medical advice. You have a lot going on medication wise clearly. I personally do not think L-Theanine would interact with Zoloft, since it acts on the same receptors as Klonopin and Zoloft and Klonopin are often taken together. I wouldn’t take L-Theanine with Klonopin though, I think L-Theanne would be good for when you get off of the Klonopin and to ease withdrawals. So I wouldn’t take it as well as Klonopin (clonopine as you referred to it).
      But talk to your doctor.

  7. Good article. I like your approach and you know a lot about the supplement. I take 600 to 800mg a day and it’s absolutely helped me, a lot. zero side effects I’m aware of. I just want to point out that you can prove your point about this being effective without slamming psychiatry. I also had a bad drug experience that put me in an awful place. Depersonalization and chronic panic. I’m a lot better now but psychiatry played a big role in helping me. It doesn’t work for everyone. I ended up having huge relief from lamictal even though I’m not bipolar or epileptic. Anyway, I totally agree about benzos. Best anxiety relief there is but it’s dangerous. Daily benzo use is playing with fire. I got hooked on clonopin and getting off was terrible. Thanks for the article

    • Yeah you are right, I shouldn’t bash psychiatry because it does help many people who truly need it. The tendency to go there by doctors now is just too strong, which is the real problem.

  8. I’m about to start taking 200mg of l-theanine with lemon balm to help with sleeping issues. Is there a certain time of day it would work best?
    Thanks

    • For sleeping issues, I would recommend 1 hour before bed. Try taking 400mg of magnesium 1 hour before bed as well. This is really relaxing on the nervous system and helps with sleep. Most of the population is currently magnesium deficient. Magnesium Citrate is a good form.

  9. Hey Sean
i am recently following your website and i love it.
Right now i am also testing l-theanine because coffee gives me jitters and makes me nervous. I also read your article on coffee addiction and maybe try it without coffee if the l-theanine doesn`t work. But right now i will stay with my morning cup of coffee.

    • Hi Erica. Menprovement isnt recomending that you use something like this as a crutch and that you should do your own research. However, in my personal experience, and from people who I have known and spoken with; using some sort of supplement can be a great way of soothing one’s current symptoms… this then puts them in a better position to find a longer term solution for whatever it is that they are wanting to change.
A good and reputable hypnotist should be able to work with your fear of heights… but make sure you find one who has experience as it is very easy for some fucking idiot to take a one day hypnosis course and then call themselves a professional. I know hypnosis might sound a little weird, but I promise that experienced clinical hypnotherapists can legitimately do good work when working with phobias

  12. Hi There, I know this is an old article, but could you please let us know how much and how long you were on Xanax and how you got off it and if you used L-Theanine to wean?

    Reply
    • I wasn’t on Xanax for more than 3 months, but withdrawals were still harsh. But they will end. You will recover. L-theanine can take the edge off a bit but it’s no miracle cure. But I also recommend exercise, meditation, lot’s of sleep and incredible amounts of patience. But yes, wean off it. I didn’t. You can do this!
